Frequently Asked Questions

+ How long does the IELTS Writing test take, and how should I divide my time?
The Writing test is 60 minutes in total. The recommended time split is 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2 — reflecting the fact that Task 2 carries twice the marks. Practicing under these exact time constraints before your test is essential, as poor time management is one of the most common reasons candidates under perform on test day.
+ Does IELTS Writing Task 1 need a conclusion?
No. Task 1 requires an overview, not a conclusion. An overview summarises the most significant overall trend or feature in the data and is typically placed after the introduction. Skipping the overview is one of the most penalised mistakes in Task 1, as it directly affects your Task Achievement score.
+ How is the IELTS Writing section scored?
Each task is scored separately on the same four criteria. Your Task 1 and Task 2 scores are then combined, with Task 2 weighted at approximately 67% of the total Writing band score. Final band scores are reported in whole and half bands (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0).
+ What happens if I write fewer words than the minimum requirement?
Writing under 150 words for Task 1 or under 250 words for Task 2 will result in a penalty under Task Achievement. Examiners treat an under-length response as an incomplete answer. Note that writing significantly over the limit does not earn extra marks — quality and relevance always matter more than quantity.
+ What is the difference between IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2?
Task 1 requires you to describe visual data (Academic) or write a letter (General Training) in at least 150 words. Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words, identical for both modules. Task 2 is worth double the marks of Task 1, so it has a much greater impact on your final Writing band score.
+ What are the four criteria used to score IELTS Writing?
IELTS Writing is marked on four criteria, each worth 25% of your total score: Task Achievement/Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. To maximise your band score, you need to perform consistently well across all four — weakness in any single criterion pulls your overall writing score down.
